The Letter to the Ephesians

The letter to the Ephesian saints was written by Paul, the apostle and the steward of the dispensation of grace, in 62 A.D. from Rome to reveal to the Church the mystery of God, which He kept hidden until now, and give instruction on how to live the Christian life, including how to overcome an attack from Satan.

A system of order for a household by which the steward dispenses rules and provides for the household according to the owner’s requirements.

Definition of a Dispensation

“Dispensation” comes from a Greek word that is a combination of the words “house” and “law”. It is the standard by which a household is managed.

Dispensation is not unique to Scripture. The concept of a steward running a household by the standards that the master sets are well recorded in human history, dating back thousands of centuries. Today we do not tend to use the word “dispensation”, rather, we express the same concept by “administration”. Scripture uses this well-known concept of a dispensations (administration) to reveal to us what God is doing and how to properly discern the standards God has set for the household we are in, which is the household of Grace.

Scripture defines what a dispensation is and gives us the standard by which we can discern all of the dispensations that are revealed by God. Scripture specifically states two of the dispensations, the dispensation of grace, and the dispensation of the fullness of times. Along with these two dispensations, when we examine how the concept of a stewardship works in Scripture and history we are provided with a solid foundation for the requirements for any dispensation. Applying these standards will result in a proper understanding of the dispensations revealed in Scripture.

The Book of Romans

The original writing of the book of Romans was in the form of a letter. This translation has been put back into this form to emphasis the unity that is within the book, which is often interfered with by chapter and verse breaks that are very poorly placed and lead the reader to misunderstand the context – verses are often placed in the middle of sentences; some chapter breaks are in the middle of sentences and some are in the middle of a context, which lead the reader to believe a break has occurred when it has not. The verses have been superscripted to reduce distraction but still provide a reference point.

a = “that which has quality of”. The Greek Language does not have the same concept of an inarticulate article as the English does.

 

The letter to the saints in Rome was written by Paul in A.D. 57-58 from Corinth. In 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 Paul reminded the Corinthian saints what the message for salvation is – Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures. Salvation is by faith, not by any quality of work. In this letter Paul goes beyond initial salvation into the Christian life showing how to have victory over our sin nature and walk by the Spirit. This is a Gospel that he is not ashamed of and has the natural ability to save, 1:16.

In Greek Class on Thursdays – there is room to join online if you cannot make it to the church – we were discussing Romans 9:22. This quick comment is based upon our development of this passage through examining the Greek grammar and words to determine its meaning and proper application.

God elected some to salvation; does He also elect some to condemnation? Why is that God has chosen to harden some, rather than show mercy to them? Can a just God harden a man’s heart and then judge him for rejecting God?

In the book of Romans, Paul discusses the choices that God has when dealing with mankind. Since God is sovereign, He can do as He pleases with men without taking away the responsibility of man to obey His Word[1] or the liability when he does not obey. In chapter nine of Romans, Paul repeats what was stated to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy and I will show compassion to whom I will show compassion”[2]. Whether or not God shows mercy to a person is not dependent upon if a man desires mercy or works for mercy, it is solely based upon God’s choice[3]. He is not obligated to save anyone. Clothe yourself with the full armor from God facing your ability to stand facing the methodologies of the slanderer. For our wrestling is not facing blood and flesh, but facing rulers, facing authorities, facing world powers of darkness of this age, facing the spiritually malignant evil in the heavens. Because of this, all of you take up the whole armor from God, in order that all of you should be enabled to stand in the malignantly evil day and having for yourself worked out all to stand. Therefore, all of you stand having girded your loins in truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having bound up the feet with the preparation of the Gospel of peace.
