Leaven Within the Church

Leaven

Leaven is used in Scripture to describe the negative impact of false doctrine and sin has upon the Christians. The characteristics of leaven are applied because as it inflates bread so that it appears to be more than their really is, so does false doctrine and allowing sin within the assembly to go unchallenged.

Galatians 5:7-12

5.7 You were running proper. Who impeded you to not be persuaded by the truth? 5.8 This persuasion is not out from the One Who called you. 5.9 A little leaven leavens the whole mix. 5.10 I am persuaded unto you in the Lord that you will frame your minds in no other way, but the one troubling you, he will bear the judgment, whoever he may be. 5.11 And I, brothers, if I yet proclaim circumcision, why still I am persecuted? 5.12 I wish also the ones troubling you will cut themselves off.

In the book of Galatians[1] Paul states that the bearing of another person’s weight[2] is filling up again the law of the Christ; yet, in Romans he writes that a Christian is not under any quality of law[3]. How do we reconcile passages of Scripture that seem to contradict each other? What does Scripture mean when it states a Christian is not under any quality of law, yet then indicates there is a law of the Christ and a law of the Spirit? Is a Christian under law or not? Ultimately this leads to the underlying question, “As a Christian, what are the guidelines for my life?” To better understand the rules of our household[4], that is to say God’s expectation for how the saved are to live their life today, we can examine how the word “law” is used in Scripture along with its normal meaning and use in everyday life so we know the difference between being under the Mosaic Law or any quality of law and filing up again the Law of the Christ by loving another saint while fulfilling the law the Spirit of life by our walk.

Philippians – The Things We Consider to be Valuable

The remaining, my brethren, you rejoice in the Lord. To write to you the same things, on the one hand, is not idleness for me, on the other hand, is certainty to you. All of you look out for dogs. All of you look out for bad workers. All of you look out for self-mutilators. For we are the circumcision, the ones rendering religious service by the Spirit of God and boasting in Christ Jesus and not in a state of being confident in the flesh;  although, I on my part am in a state of having confidence even in the flesh, if, assuming it is true, anyone else thinks to be confident in the flesh, I more.  Circumcised on the eighth day, out from the race of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew out from Hebrews, according to the law a Pharisee, according to zeal, a persecutor of the Church, according to righteousness, the one by the law, being blameless. But what things were to me gain, these things I consider, because of the Christ, to be loss. The Letter to the Ephesians

The letter to the Ephesian saints was written by Paul, the apostle and the steward of the dispensation of grace, in 62 A.D. from Rome to reveal to the Church the mystery of God, which He kept hidden until now, and give instruction on how to live the Christian life, including how to overcome an attack from Satan.

Ephesians Translation
