Galatians 3:19 – 4:2

3.19 Therefore, why the Law? It was added in favor of the transgressions, up until which the seed should come, who was promised, having been directed through messengers by the hand of a mediator. 3.20 And the mediator is not of one, but God is one. 3.21 Therefore is the Law against the promise from God? May it never come to be! 1:1 Paul an apostle, not from men nor through men, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, Who raised Him out from the dead, 1:2 and all the brethren with me, to the assemblies of the Galatia. 1:3 Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, 1:4 Who gave Himself concerning our sins, in order that He should deliver us out from the present malignantly evil age according to the desirous will of God even our Father, 1:5 to Whom the proper opinion (glory) into the ages of the ages. Amen.

1:6 I marvel that in this manner so quickly you change from the One who called you by grace of Christ into a different kind of gospel, 1:7 which is not the same kind; except, there are some who trouble you and desire to distort the gospel of the Christ. 1:8 But even if perhaps we or an angel out from heaven should bring good news to you which is alongside that good news already brought to you, it[1] is to be set aside[2]. 1:9 As I before said, and now again I say, “If, assuming it is true, someone brings good news to you alongside that which you have received, it is to be set aside.” 1:10 For now do I persuade men or God? To quench (σβέννυμι)

To quench (σβέννυμι) generally means to suppress something. It is used in Scripture concerning fire, lamps, and desires.

Isaiah prophesied concerning the coming of the Messiah. He will not be quarrelsome nor cry out. No one will hear his voice in the streets. He will be gentle, not bruising a reed, and will not quench a smoking lamp wick until the time of justice comes, Matthew 12:20. He did not challenge the judgment of those in authority who sought to unrighteously kill Him. Instead, He walked quietly among the people, healing them and instructing them to not make Him known, for He did not seek a reputation for Himself but to show forth the glory of God the Father and do His will.

As Israel waits in the wilderness for the second coming of the Messiah, some will be prepared for His return. Those who are not ready will miss Him as He sweeps through the wilderness taking what is His, Matthew 25:8. The parable of the ten virgins is used to represent what will happen at this time. Those who are prepared will ensure they have sufficient oil for their lamps as they wait, where the others will pay no attention until the last moment, but their lamps will be quenched because of their failure to prepare.

While speaking of the Kingdom of the Heavens to the Jews, Jesus lays out the rules of His Kingdom, which we also know as the Millennial Kingdom. In His Kingdom, righteousness rules, Matthew 13:41-42. Present Indicative Middle

The Present Indicative Middle in Greek is a grammatical mood, voice, and tense used to describe action that the subject performs with the emphasis on the subject’s involvement, either on himself or for his own benefit.

The middle voice represents the subject as acting with reference to himself. I wash myself (λούομαι); I buy for myself (ἀγοράζομαι).

The Present Indicative Middle in Greek follows the typical present indicative conjugation patterns, but with specific middle voice endings. In the present tense, the middle has the following personal endings:

Person Singular Plural
1st ομαι ομεθα
2nd ῃ (ει) εσθε
3rd εται ονται

Present Indicative Middle of λούω (“I wash myself”)

1st sg. λούομαι I wash myself
2nd sg. λούῃ (or λούει) You wash yourself

Thematic Vowel in the Present Indicative Middle

 

The thematic vowel is inserted between the verb stem and the middle endings. The thematic vowels are ο and ε, depending on the form, and they follow this pattern:

  1. ο before -μαι, -μεθα, -νται.
  2. ε before ται, -σαι (contracted to or ει), and -σθε.

 

Present Indicative Middle Personal Endings:
