Happy are those who die by a lord, Revelation 14:13

In Revelation 14:13, we come across the phrase “by a lord” when John is instructed to write, “Happy are the dead, the ones who die from now on by a lord (ἐν κυρίῳ).” The word “lord” is capitalized in some English translations, indicating it is in the Lord Jesus. However, the context does not support this interpretation. The timing of Revelation chapter fourteen, starting in verse six, is in the last half of the Tribulation Period, just before the return of Christ. Three angels are seen giving distinctly different messages. The first angel has good news related to eternity, the gospel for those in the Great Tribulation. This is not the gospel message presented today, which has the inherent ability to save a person, Romans 1:16, and relates to the death for sin and resurrection of Christ three days later according to the Scriptures, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4. This messenger is bringing a message to the Nations, telling them to worship the God, Who is the Creator of heaven and earth, for the hour of His judgment has come, Revelation 14:7. The second angel cries out with the message that Babylon, the great religious harlot, has fallen, Revelation 14:8. Her fall is just before the return of Christ to claim the earth and set up His kingdom. A third angel is then heard shouting that anyone who worships the beast and his image, having received his mark, will now face the wrath of God, Revelation 14:9-11. At this point, John is instructed to write, “Happy are the dead, the ones dying by a lord from now.” They are happy because they are able to rest from their hard labor, Revelation 14:13.

The Rephaim (רְ֝פָאִ֗ים)

Rephaim means fallen ones and is a description of the offspring of demons and humans. We first see them called Nephilim (mutants) prior to the Noahic flood, when the demons forcibly took the daughters of men and bore mutants (Genesis 6:1,4). These are the angels who left their first estate (Jude 6) and were put in chains as a result of their attempt to corrupt not only the seed of humans, but of all biological life (Genesis 6:12). Why would they do this? God had promised Satan that the seed of the woman would crush him, so some of the demons attempted to corrupt all seed so this could not come true (Genesis 3:15). Even after the Noahic flood they attempted it again, which is when they ended up in chains awaiting judgment (Nephilim on the earth in those days and also after – Genesis 6:3). After the flood they are known by different names, along with being referred to as Rephaim (fallen ones). The Moabites called them Emim (Deuteronomy 2:11). The Ammonites called them Samsummim (Deuteronomy 2:20). We see them in the time of Abraham when Chedorlaomer sacked Sodom and took his nephew (Genesis 14:5-16). As part of the land promised to Abraham and his descendants, the land of the Rephaim was given (Genesis 15:18). They were in the promise land and caused the Israelites to fear taking the land (Numbers 13:33). Due to their fight with Moses, the kingdom of Og, one of the last remaining of the Rephaim until the time of King David, resided in Ashtaroth and Edrei (Joshua 13:12) and were destroyed by King David (Deuteronomy 3:11, 13; Joshua 12:4), bringing an end to the Rephaim upon the earth. The Law of The Christ

Caring for Members of the Body

Pastor Luther Walker

In the book of Galatians[1] Paul states that the bearing of another person’s weight[2] is filling up again the law of the Christ; yet, in Romans he writes that a Christian is not under any quality of law[3]. How do we reconcile passages of Scripture that seem to contradict each other? What does Scripture mean when it states a Christian is not under any quality of law, yet then indicates there is a law of the Christ and a law of the Spirit? Is a Christian under law or not? Ultimately this leads to the underlying question, “As a Christian, what are the guidelines for my life?” To better understand the rules of our household[4], that is to say God’s expectation for how the saved are to live their life today, we can examine how the word “law” is used in Scripture along with its normal meaning and use in everyday life so we know the difference between being under the Mosaic Law or any quality of law and filing up again the Law of the Christ by loving another saint while fulfilling the law the Spirit of life by our walk.

Since we are in the Dispensation of Grace, not the Dispensation of Law, the standard for our household is different. Scripture is very clear on the fact that a Christian is not under the Mosaic Law or any quality of law[5]; however, there is still a standard by which those who are a […]
