Fight the Good Fight

1 Timothy 1:18-20

This is the message I set alongside you, child Timothy, according to the the prophecies having gone before upon you, in order that you should fight the good fight by them, holding faith and a good conscience, which some rejecting have shipwrecked concerning the faith,  of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, who I hand over to Satan in order that they should be child trained not to blaspheme.

The Message Paul set alongside Timothy, 1 Timothy 1:18-20

  1. According to the prophecies that have gone before him
    1. Timothy has a spiritual gift given to him through prophecy, 1 Timothy 4:14
    2. Prophecy is not by the desirous will of man nor of a single person’s interpretation, 2 Peter 1:20, 21
    3. Prophecy is not active today within the Church, 1 Corinthians 13:8
  2. He should fight a good fight
    1. Our fight is not a physical fight, 2 Corinthians 10:3
    2. We do not fight of our own accord, 1 Corinthians 9:7
    3. Getting oneself caught up in daily life, 2 Timothy 2:4
  3. Holding faith in a good conscience
    1. A quality of faith
    2. A quality of a good conscience
  4. Some reject a good conscience and shipwreck the faith
    1. Israel rejected God in the wilderness, Acts 7:39
    2. The Jews reject the salvation, Act 13:46
    3. God did not nor has rejected the Jewish nation, Romans 11:1, 2
    4. Their faith is shipwrecked
      1. Used metaphorically for something or someone that has been brought to ruin.
      2. Predominate example of its use outside of Scripture in the common language.
      3. Two of which Paul turned over to Satan
        1. So they should be taught (child trained) not to blasphemy
        2. They did not lose their salvation
        3. Hymenaeus and Alexander were falsely attributing things to God

Doctrine and Teaching

All Scripture has information for the saints today, but not all Scripture is for the saint’s practice. The Greek language uses two different words to describe these types of information. The first, often translated teaching, is referring to information that is to be learned but not to be practiced, where the other word means doctrine – that which is to be practiced.

Teaching – διδασκαλία (Information to be learned but not practiced)

  • Teachers teaching the precepts of man, Matthew 15:9; Mark 7:7; Colossians 2:22
    1. The people draw near with their mouth and honor with their lips, but are far from Him with their hearts
    2. They reverence Him in vain
  • “Precepts” is used exclusively of the teachings of men. – A royal or Imperial ordinance
    1. Touch not, taste not, handle not, Colossians 2:22
    2. The elementary principles of the world system, Colossians 2:20
  • Have an appearance of wisdom in self made religion and self abasement and mistreating the body, Colossians 2:23
  • Teachings of Demons, 1 Timothy 4:1-6
    1. Speaking lies
    2. Having a conscience seared
    3. Forbidding to marry
    4. Abstaining from meats
    5. In contrast to good (well) teachings
  • The Time will come when men will not endure healthy teaching, 2 Timothy 4:3
    1. They will heap up for themselves teachers after their own lusts
    2. They will turn from the truth to myths
  • Within the Church
    1. Used of information that is to be learned but not practiced
    2. A separate gift from a Pastor, Romans 12:7 (Pastor is both a shepherd and a teacher)
    3. Information written before for our learning, Romans 15:4
    4. Pastors who labors in the Word and teaching, 1 Timothy 5:17
    5. Scripture is profitable for teachings, reproof, correction and child training, 2 Timothy 3:16

Why do we need salvation?

To understand why we need salvation we need to go back to the beginning when God created humans. He created Adam in His image and likeness and built Eve from his side1. Adam was given a commandment by God that he was not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. In the day in which he ate of it the punishment would be death2. Not just physical death, but also spiritual death – dying you will die. Although Eve was thoroughly deceived and transgressed the law, Adam was not deceived and chose to disobey God. The result was spiritual separation from God and now he is subject to physical death. Did God setup Adam and Eve to fail? Absolutely not. He gave them all they needed to success. Satan deceived Eve into eating the fruit from the tree; however, Adam was not deceived at all and of his own free will chose to eat, knowing he was disobeying God3.

The Beatitudes – Part 2

  1. Happy are the Ones Hungering and Thirsting for the Righteousness, Matthew 5:6
    1. They are characterized as hungering and thirsting
      1. They do not possess righteousness
      2. Hunger and thirst come from lack
        1. After 40 days in the wilderness, Jesus was hungry, Matthew 4:2
        2. The disciples become hungry on the Sabbath, Matthew 12:1
        3. Primarily used of the lack of food and water, Revelation 7:16;
      3. Those who came to Christ during His earthly ministry would not hunger or thirst, John 6:35; Romans 12:20
    2. A Christian already possesses a quality of the Righteousness of God in Christ, 2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Corinthians 1:30
    3. They will be satisfied (used of eating and drinking until one is full)
  2. Happy are the Merciful, Matthew 5:7
    1. “Mercy” is relief from the affects of one’s own sin
    2. An expression of God’s mercy results in salvation, Titus 3:5
      1. God’s show of mercy upon Paul, 1 Timothy 1:13, 16
      2. God’s show of mercy upon the Gentiles, 1 Peter 2:10
      3. God has shut up all in disobedience so that He may show mercy to all, Romans 11:30 – 32
      4. Mercy is not shown to a man on the basis of his desire to receive it, Romans 9:16-18
    3. Mercy and the Christian
      1. Christians receive mercy on the basis of God’s mercy apart from works of righteousness, Titus 3:5
      2. Mercy is upon a Christian who walks by the rule of the New Creation (The Christ), Galatians 6:15, 16
      3. God showed us mercy while we were still dead in our trespasses, Ephesians 2:4, 5

The Battle for the Mind

The Battle is for the Mind, it is not a Physical Battle

… because we do not wrestle against blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world powers of darkness of this age, against spiritual malignant evil in the heavens, Ephesians 6:12

Satan’s methodologies:

  • Independence from God, 1 Corinthians 10:31
  • Disappointment, Job 3:1-13
  • Discouragement, Job 19:1-19
  • Bitterness, Job 7:11; 10:1
  • Doubt, Romans 14:23
  • Spiritual Cowardice, John 18:17,25,27
  • Lying, Acts 5:1-4
  • Pride, 1 Timothy 6:4
  • An Unforgiving spirit, 2 Corinthians 2:10,11
  • Stealing, Ephesians 4:27-30
  • Corrupt Communication, Ephesians 4:27-30
  • Spiritual laziness, 1 Timothy 5:11-15
  • Gossip, 1 Timothy 5:11-15

Our Defense – The Armor from God

The whole armor from God needs to be put on only when under attack, Ephesians 6:13.

  1. Protect the sensitive parts of your mind with the truth, Ephesians 6:14; 1 Peter 1:13.
  2. Breastplate of righteousness, Ephesians 6:14; Philippians 3:9; 2 Corinthians 5:21.
  3. Feet made ready with the Gospel of Peace, Ephesians 6:15; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4.
  4. The shield of faith – taking God at His Word, Ephesians 6:16; Hebrews 11:1.
  5. The helmet of salvation, Ephesians 6:17; Ephesians 2:8.
  6. The sword belonging to the Spirit, Ephesians 6:17; 2 Peter 3:2.

Putting on the Armor from God is a mental process by which we take elements from our position in Christ and our salvation and use them in defense against a mindset that is manipulated by Satan or his demons. Satan casts thoughts at the Christian in an attempt for that saint to accept Satan’s desires as his or her own.
